Why We Replaced the G3S with the New G5S
Why We Replaced the G3S with the New G5S
The G3S was our best-selling all-in-one Smith machine — here's why we've moved on to the G5S, and what's actually different.
01The G3S Was a Genuine Best Seller
Before we get into what's changed, it's worth saying clearly: the G3S isn't being replaced because it was a bad machine. It's the opposite. The Plate Loaded Functional Trainer G3S has been one of our top-selling machines for good reason — a Smith machine, dual pulley functional trainer and free-weight rack in one compact, plate-loaded frame that suited apartments, garages and small studios.
02Meet the G5S
The G5S Smith Machine with Cable Functional Trainer is the machine we've chosen to take the G3S's place. It's still a plate-loaded, all-in-one Smith and cable station — but the frame has been re-engineered to be larger, more heavily braced and more stable under load:
- Wider, deeper frame for improved clearance and stability between the Smith bar and the cable towers
- Long and short safety racks with ABS padded, height-adjustable catches
- Cross-over pulley cables with an adjustable pulley bracket for a wider range of cable exercises
- Dedicated storage for standard, Olympic, straight and curl bars, so accessories aren't left on the floor
03The Practical Difference: No More Removing Plates
This is the change our customers will actually feel every session. On the G3S, if you wanted to use the Smith bar and load a cable station on the opposite side at the same time — say, supersetting a Smith squat with a cable exercise, or training with a partner using both sides — you'd sometimes need to slide plates off the storage horn to give the cable arm enough clearance to move freely.
Because the G5S has a wider depth across the frame, this isn't an issue. There's enough clearance for the Smith machine and the opposite cable station to be loaded and used at the same time without plates fouling the cable path. If you like supersetting or sharing the machine with a training partner, this is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade over the G3S.
