ℹ️ Why colour-coding follows the competition standard: The colours on these plates follow the internationally recognised weightlifting colour convention — red 25kg, blue 20kg, yellow 15kg, green 10kg — so experienced lifters can read a loaded bar at a glance and quickly confirm the total weight. In a busy box or commercial gym this speeds up loading, reduces mistakes and makes plate organisation simple. (Our 5kg is grey rather than white for a cleaner look that hides marks better in heavy daily use.)

Where Coloured Bumper Plates Perform Best

🏋

Olympic Weightlifting

Purpose-built for the snatch and clean & jerk, where the bar is regularly dropped from overhead. The rubber construction and controlled bounce protect your equipment and floor through countless drops, while the consistent diameter keeps the bar at the correct pull height for every rep.

🥊

CrossFit & Functional Fitness

A staple of every CrossFit box and functional training floor. Bumper plates handle high-rep WODs, touch-and-go lifts and dropped barbells without damage, and the colour-coding lets athletes load and change weights fast between movements and stations.

🏠

Home & Garage Gyms

The right choice for any home gym where deadlifts, cleans or overhead work end with the bar on the floor. Paired with rubber gym flooring, bumper plates protect concrete and timber sub-floors and keep noise down for shared and suburban homes.

🤌

PT Studios & Commercial Gyms

Durable enough for daily multi-user loading across a full client roster. The steel insert hub resists wear from constant plate changes, and colour-coding keeps a busy free-weight floor organised. Order in volume for a complete commercial Olympic fitout.

Who Is This Right For?

Coloured Olympic Bumper Plates Are Ideal For

  • Olympic weightlifters — who need drop-rated plates with a consistent diameter and controlled bounce for the snatch and clean & jerk
  • CrossFit athletes & box owners — needing durable, colour-coded plates that survive high-rep WODs and constant dropped lifts across many users
  • Home & garage gym owners — who want to deadlift, clean and press without damaging the floor or bar, especially when paired with rubber gym flooring
  • Powerlifters & strength athletes — who want the protection of bumper plates for heavy pulls and the ability to drop the bar safely after a max effort
  • PT studios & commercial gyms — fitting out an Olympic platform or free-weight zone that needs to withstand daily multi-user loading
  • Anyone comparing to cast iron plates — if you drop the bar at any point in your training, bumper plates are the correct choice over cast iron, which can crack and damage your floor

Frequently Asked Questions

Coloured Olympic Bumper Plates — FAQ

Bumper plates are made of high-density rubber and are designed to be dropped; cast iron plates are not. If your training includes Olympic lifting (the snatch or clean & jerk), CrossFit, or any movement where the loaded bar ends up on the floor — including failed or max-effort reps — you need bumper plates. The rubber construction absorbs the impact of a dropped bar, protecting the plates, the barbell and your floor, and keeps the noise down. Cast iron plates are cheaper per kilo and more compact, which suits static lifts on machines or in a rack where the bar is never dropped, but dropping cast iron can crack the plates and damage both your bar and your floor. For most free-weight and Olympic training, bumper plates are the safer and more versatile choice.
The colours follow the internationally recognised weightlifting convention so you can identify weights at a glance: 25kg is red, 20kg is blue, 15kg is yellow and 10kg is green. This standard is used in competition and in gyms worldwide, which means experienced lifters can read a loaded barbell and confirm the total weight instantly without checking each plate. Our 5kg plate is grey. The colour-coding is the key practical advantage in busy CrossFit boxes and commercial gyms — it speeds up loading, reduces errors and keeps the plate storage organised. Every plate also carries raised KG markings on both faces as a second confirmation of the weight.
Yes — these plates have a standard 50mm Olympic bore, which is the universal size for Olympic barbells, so they fit any standard Olympic bar, including men's 20kg and women's 15kg bars, as well as Olympic dumbbell handles and loading pins. The precision steel insert hub gives a snug, accurate fit on the bar sleeve and resists the wallowing and elongation that cheaper plastic-centred plates develop over time. They are not compatible with standard 1-inch (25mm) bars — if you have an older standard-size barbell rather than an Olympic bar, these will not fit. If you are unsure which bar you have, the Olympic sleeve is the thicker 50mm rotating section; measure the bar end to confirm.
Bumper plates are designed to be dropped, but the surface underneath matters. We strongly recommend dropping onto rubber gym flooring or a dedicated lifting platform rather than bare concrete, tile or timber. While the rubber plate absorbs much of the impact, repeatedly dropping a loaded bar directly onto a hard floor can still crack tiles, mark concrete, damage timber and shorten the life of the plates. A 15–20mm rubber floor or an Olympic platform protects your sub-floor, reduces noise for neighbours, and gives the plates a consistent surface to land on. We stock rubber gym flooring designed exactly for this — pairing it with your bumper plates is the best way to protect your whole setup.
A common starting point is a pair of 20kg plates plus a pair of 10kg and a pair of 5kg, which with a 20kg Olympic bar gives you a 90kg total and enough range to make small jumps. Many lifters then add a second pair of 20kg plates as they get stronger. Because our plates are sold individually and in pairs, you can build the exact set you need rather than buying a fixed package — for example, adding a pair of 15kg (yellow) plates fills the gap between 10kg and 20kg for smaller increments. For Olympic lifting specifically, 15kg and 20kg plates share the competition diameter so the bar sits at the correct pull height. Tell us your goals and we can recommend a starting set and a freight quote.
Yes. These bumper plates are well suited to commercial gyms, CrossFit boxes and PT studios where plates are loaded, changed and dropped constantly throughout the day. The high-density rubber and steel insert hub stand up to high-frequency multi-user use, the colour-coding keeps a busy floor organised, and the integrated grip slot speeds up plate changes between athletes and stations. For a full commercial Olympic fitout — multiple platforms, racks and complete plate sets — we offer bulk pricing and can put together a package across the full 5kg–25kg range with matching barbells and flooring. Contact us for a commercial quote.
The heavier plates do. From 10kg upward, bumper plates share a standard diameter of approximately 450mm (the competition standard), so whether you load 10kg or 25kg per side, the bar sits at the same correct height off the floor for pulling. This consistency is important for Olympic lifting and deadlifts because it keeps your starting position the same regardless of load. The lighter 5kg plate is thinner and may be slightly smaller in diameter, as a very thin large-diameter plate would be too fragile to drop — for that reason, very light training loads for beginners are sometimes built using a technique bar or a single larger plate rather than stacking only 5kg bumpers. For dropped lifts, always have at least a 10kg or larger bumper on the bar.
Bumper plates are low-maintenance but last longer with basic care. Store them upright on a plate tree or horizontal rack rather than leaving them stacked flat under load for long periods, which can cause the rubber to deform over time. Wipe them down occasionally with a damp cloth and mild detergent to remove chalk, sweat and dust, and keep them out of prolonged direct sunlight and extreme heat, which can degrade rubber. Avoid dropping a near-empty bar (with only light plates) repeatedly from overhead, as the lighter plates take more relative impact. Inspect the steel insert hub periodically for any movement. With sensible use and storage, quality bumper plates will last many years of regular training.
These bumper plates are available both individually and in pairs, so you can build exactly the set you need. Buying in pairs is the usual approach for balanced loading, but the option to buy a single plate is useful for adding an odd plate to fine-tune a set or replacing one damaged plate without buying a whole new pair. A home lifter might build up gradually a pair at a time, while a commercial gym might order multiple matched pairs across the full range.
